Baccarat in Canada: pick the cheapest bet and ignore the scorecard

You never draw a card yourself, so every bit of strategy comes down to which bet you choose.

The short version

Baccarat has three main bets. Banker costs about 1.06 per cent after the usual 5 per cent commission, Player about 1.24 per cent, and Tie roughly 14 per cent. The cards are drawn by fixed rules, and previous hands do not predict the next, so choosing the cheaper bet is the only real edge.

Baccarat is the most hands-off table game. No hit or stand, no splits, no insurance. You bet and the rules do the rest. Still choosing? Our Canada casino shortlist lays out the options.

That makes the choice of bet the whole game. Be of legal age in your province and set limits before the first round.

Some tables remove the commission and instead pay half on a Banker win with a total of 6. Figures change, so check the rule panel.

How a round is settled

Cards from 2 to 9 keep their value, aces count one, tens and face cards count zero. Only the last digit of the total matters. The hand nearest 9 wins. A third card is drawn automatically when set conditions are met.

You make no decisions after the bet. That is why a round can finish in under a minute online.

Why scorecards do not help

Big road, bead plate and other grids are fun to read. They also encourage the idea that a streak has to end. The shoe holds no such obligation. Small card-removal effects exist, but they are far too small to turn the edge in your favour.

Treat the grid as decoration. Never raise a bet because the display shows a pattern.

Side bets in short

Pair bets and dragon bonuses attract with high payouts, but the edge is larger than on the main bets. Keep them small and read each paytable, because providers differ.

Where to play and how bonuses treat it

Live studios dominate baccarat, with speed and squeeze variants. The live casino page lists what to check at a table. Contribution toward bonuses tends to be low, so work through the wagering requirement guide before taking an offer.

Adults only. The legal age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec. Gambling carries real risk of loss. Set limits and stop when it stops being fun. This page is general information, not legal, tax or financial advice.

Common questions

Which baccarat bet should I choose?

Banker has the lowest house edge even after commission, with Player a close second. Tie looks attractive because of its 8 to 1 payout, but it costs roughly ten times as much per bet. If you want your budget to last, stay with Banker or Player and keep stakes small.

Why does the casino charge commission on Banker?

Under the drawing rules, the Banker hand wins slightly more often than the Player hand. A 5 per cent commission on winning Banker bets compensates for that. Even after paying it, Banker remains the cheapest of the three main bets, as the table above shows.

Is there a demo mode for baccarat?

Several studios publish RNG versions with play credits, which suits learning the rules. Live tables almost always need real money. Our page on free casino games explains how to use demos and what to refuse when a site asks too much.
